The melody is performed solely on piano. Its tones drift through the air with a light echo, shifting between major and minor to express contrasts between brightness and darkness. Several listeners have described the opening as reminiscent of the Moonlight Sonata, before the music opens into more hopeful and luminous passages. In the middle, the intensity and tempo increase, before the melody returns to its original theme and finally settles into a calm, thoughtful ending with low, soft tones.
